Students have worked
very hard this past month as they completed their Fall fitness
challenges! All students in grades 3-5 ran 1 mile and participated
in the sit and reach, curl-up, and upper body tests! I am really
proud of their perseverance and effort! We will revisit these same
challenges with the hope of improvement in the Spring.
Even though students
in K-2 did not participate in fitness testing, they worked extremely hard at
understanding and demonstrating our four major fitness concepts:
cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and
flexibility. See if your child can explain them to you!
This week, all
students will begin their respective throwing and catching units in physical
education and will begin nutrition in health. K-2 students will work
on healthy vs. sometimes healthy foods, will learn how to build a healthy meal,
and will explore the food groups in MyPlate.
Students in grades 3-5
will explore food labels, added sugar, and nutrients.
Students in grade 3 will also be participating in the Nutrition
Detectives Program facilitated by the YMCA. For two Fridays in
November, staff from the YMCA will be teaching students how to be nutrition
detectives when it comes to food labels! Among other things, students
will learn to see beyond marketing strategies and will instead learn to watch
out for things such as trans fat and other artificial ingredients.
In the coming weeks, ask your children if they can teach you some of
their new detective tools!
